room spray from grove collaborative bottle and refill bottle

Introduction & Overview

The product combination is a plastic-free room spray meant to freshen up your living space. The scents are also concentrated, so they come in small glass bottles and you mix them with tap water in the reusable bottle before use.

I really care about how I smell. That doesn’t mean I want you to smell me the second I walk in the room (in a good way), but I do care about any possible negative odors. We all have those moments where we get a whiff of our pits or our feet after a long day and pray to God that no one else noticed. At least, I hope I’m not alone in that. I want the same thing for my home. I don’t want anyone smelling something foul or nasty.

In the good ol’ days, when I was living with my parents and two dogs, we pretty much always had Febreeze under the sink. Every once and a while I would go around the house and freshen things up. I stopped that when I went to college and didn’t have carpets, couches, and chairs that five people and two dogs were using everyday. But, since I’ve moved out on my own post-college I’ve been looking for sustainable alternatives to Febreeze. That brings me to the product I’m reviewing today, Grove’s Room Spray Concentrate and Reusable Room Spray Bottle.

Do I recommend this product?

Overall, because this product only get’s a 3.5 star total, I’m going to say no for most people. It’s also interesting that a 3.5 is what the product combo has on their website (as of 9/2021) too.

The room spray combo doesn’t get Andrew Approval but that doesn’t mean you won’t like it.

I would actually compare the fragrance to essential oil diffusers. I’ve used those before, in an effort to rid my home of candles and they just smelled so weak to me while also failing to stick around. I would say these scents are similar, if not a little stronger.

I would recommend giving this room spray combo a try if you enjoy essential oils and natural fragrances, or if you just want a temporary scent. Maybe you want something to spray on your pillow at night that won’t last forever or give you a major headache. This combo could be great for that. It just doesn’t work in my life.

I will say, I do recommend the bottle if you need a very fine mister. I mist my plants and I will definitely be repurposing the bottle for use on my plants. It’s the finest mist I’ve seen from a bottle and that’s perfect for misting plants. If you need a great spray bottle for that purpose, get this guy and just skip out on the concentrates!

Does it get the job done? (Function)

Their product description says this about it’s purpose, “..to make any room or moment feel more special.” I would like to give more than 3 stars because it does just this, it only lasts for a moment. That moment will be special but it won’t last. So, in a way it does what it says it will, but they didn’t really understand the assignment in my opinion. I want something a little longer lasting. That doesn’t mean I don’t recommend it though, so keep reading to see if you should try it.

Is it durable?

Again, I’m giving it 3 stars because the fragrance doesn’t hang around like I want it to. I think that might be a pro for some and a con for others. For me, it’s a negative. In regards to the bottle, I think the bottle is great and will last a long time. I plan to use it for a different purpose after my fragrances run out and I’ll explain those later on in this post too.

Ease of use?

The concentrate is super easy to use and the bottle is magnificent! It doesn’t get easier.

Do I want to show it off? (Appearance)

Meh, not really. It’s cute, it looks good but I’m not wowed by the product nor do I think it really solves a problem in my household so I’m not confident it would help others. I get really excited about sharing items with people when I know they work amazingly well and will improve your life/kitchen/lunches/____ (fill in the blank).

What is Grove Collaborative?

In case you missed it, I’ve reviewed the brand Grove Collaborative. This is a detailed look at who the company is, what they’re aiming to accomplish, what they do, and more.

To cover it in a few words, Grove is a subscription based company that carries many many sustainable alternatives to what you’ll typically find on supermarket or grocery store shelves.

What options do I have to buy?

They have three scents:

  • Sanctuary – lavender, blue sage, and clove
  • Homemade – vanilla, brown sugar, and sandalwood
  • Stargazing – juniper, eucalyptus, and sweet orange
Here’s a look at the labeling of the scent I haven’t used yet:

Cost and Comparability

Compared to Febreeze, like I mentioned earlier, it’s roughly equivalent in total. Per ounce, the Grove choice is much much more expensive.

I don’t have a normal price breakdown here because I don’t recommend this product with full Andrew Approval but I would like to say that each fill up lasts me a long time. If my memory serves me correctly, I would say that one bottle of concentrate probably lasts me as long as a bottle of Febreeze did back in the day.

Beware of Subscriptions

This item is available for the Grove Subscription option. You are automatically enrolled when you purchase, but you can unenroll immediately after finishing checkout.

If you want to read more about that, check out my subscription section on my post reviewing the Grove Dish Soap and Dispenser set.

What makes this a sustainable choice?

Glass is endlessly recyclable, similar to aluminum. That’s a pro over plastic bottle alternatives.

It’s also a concentrate, and like with all the concentrates, you save space, packaging, and fuel consumption in transport because you’re adding your own water from the tap.
